Another war movie classic, Mister Roberts tells the
tale of a group of sailors trapped on a wretched cargo ship somewhere in the
Pacific Ocean. The all-star cast including Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon and James
Cagney took this Broadway production to the big screen with outstanding performances.
Henry
Fonda stars as Lt. Doug Roberts, the executive officer aboard the cargo ship
Reluctant, known to its crew as "The Bucket." He is on a non-stop
crash course with the captain, played by James Cagney. Trapped on the ship for
almost an entire year with no liberty, the crew will do almost anything for
a night on the town. Mister Roberts finally makes a deal with the captain to
get the crew ashore, then pays for their fun by knuckling under to his worse
enemy, the captain with which he has nothing in common. Jack Lemmon also gives
a fine performance as the unsinkable Ensign Frank Pulver.
This is an outstanding family movie with no scenes that parents will find offensive.
The sheer number of wacky things that happen on the crew's liberty alone almost
make the movie worth seeing, and exceptional performances by the cast round
out a truly excellent production.
