Das Boot must rank as one of the all-time best submarine
movies of all time. Based on a true story of the Second World War, this director's
cut edition adds many original scenes back to the movie, extending its length
and amplifying previously released content.
Sailing
from Rochelle, France during World War II, the crew of "the boat"
are seen through the eyes of a German war correspondent. Young boys leave port
for battle and are quickly turned into men by the stress of war. Forced to endure
the stress of long periods underwater, rough Atlantic weather, and depth charge
attack by convoy escorts, some of the crew begin to show fatigue and strain.
This cut of the movie also gives an enhanced view of the personal lives and
motivations of the crew of the U-Boat as they interact with each other and reflect
on the lives and sweethearts that they have left behind.
A rendezvous with a secret Nazi ship located in Vigo, Spain replenishes the
submarine's supplies for a last desperate mission into the Mediterranean Sea.
Forced to run the British blockade at Gibraltar, the ship faces its most dangerous
test of all.
The scenes filmed aboard the submarine are just spectacular. A new photographic
technology was employed by the filmmakers to make the shots inside the submarine
and that is what gives this movie its particular look and feel. This cut also
has remastered audio that adds to the eerie feeling of the underwater shots.
If you have never seen this movie, it is highly recommended as an action adventure.
Viewers of previous versions will find so much added material in this cut that
it will seem like a different, longer and much better movie.
