Lyric Language Doubleplay Japanese is a videotape and audio cassette combination that is first in a two part series of Japanese language learning programs targeted to young children. The tape is in color and runs about 30 minutes, and the cassette contains the same songs as the video.
The program consists of several short features with themes. The themes are staged at places that children identify with fun such as amusement parks, the zoo, and the beach. Most of the actors are children doing things that children naturally like, and this makes the material even more interesting for them to watch.
Each segment is presented with a song, and each song is sung with the Japanese and English lyrics alternating. Each important word is presented at least twice in every song. This repetition along with the music assists in remembering the new language being learned. Subtitles in English and romanized Japanese are displayed as the song is being sung, assisting with mastery of the vocabulary.
This program introduces the child to a range of basic vocabulary. The themes help the child to learn animal names, days of the week, family members, and basic concept words including cold, hot, up, down, open and closed and other similar concepts. The audio cassette gives the child something they can take along on trips or to their room and learn at their leisure when a television is not available.
This series of videotapes is by far the most professionally produced children's language learning program we have seen in VHS. The songs are unique and lively, and the voices and instrumentation are well performed. The action in the video sequences is also lively, and the actors don't seem staged or stiff like they do in many other tapes of this genre. It is easy to get children to watch this tape over and over. Even young children will keep their interest right to the end .
This program is a great way to introduce your child to a new foreign language or to reinforce existing language skills. The features are fun for both children and adults, while covering a range of basic vocabulary in a manner that holds a child's attention.
